Congress elects Sonia Gandhi as Chairperson of CPP

She currently represents Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha

NATIONAL, June 08, 2024: Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi has accepted the position of Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP), which comprises members of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. She currently represents Rajasthan in the Rajya Sabha. 

The announcement was made by the AICC(I) Saturday evening. Earlier in the day, the Extended Meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a resolution requesting Rahul Gandhi to assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

Congress leader KC Venugopal believes that Gandhi's leadership will help build a strong and vigilant opposition. Senior Congress leader Joyram Ramesh echoes and said that the recent elections have served as a booster dose for the Congress party.

The party will conduct a thorough analysis of its performance in each state, he said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge congratulated the newly elected members of the Congress from Manipur, Nagaland, Assam, and Meghalaya, and expressed the party's unwavering support for democracy and the Constitution. He stated that the party will work united with its I.N.D.I.A bloc partners both inside and outside of Parliament.
