NATIONAL, July 15, 2024: After winning the silver medal, Arshiya Das has now secured the gold medal for Bishmay Balika Dabaru in the Western Asia Youth Chess Tournament held in Sri Lanka from July 7-15. This achievement came after her success in the blitz event, where she won the silver medal.
Arshiya, the only daughter of Purnendu and Arnisha Das, scored 5.5 points in 9 rounds and placed seventh individually. However, it was the Indian team, consisting of Arshia, Mittika Mallick and Sachi Jain that took home the gold medal with a total of 17 points.
Despite being eligible to play in the Under-14 category, Arshiya chose to compete in the U-19 category to gain valuable experience. The Western Asia Junior Chess Championship will commence tomorrow and Arshia, representing Matrix Chess Academy, will be competing in the under-20 category.
The winner of this event will receive the International Master Norm, while the second and third placers will earn the Master Norm in Chess Feed. Arshiya, an eighth-grader from Holy Cross School, is optimistic about her performance in the upcoming event, which will take place from July 16-22.
In 2019, Arshiya did not achieve satisfactory results in the event held in Delhi, making this victory even more meaningful for her. She is also delighted to have received the gold medal at the residence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka.
"I am determined to perform even better in the junior event and make my country proud," says Arshiya, speaking on the phone from Sri Lanka.
