Bharat Kalita gets Gaurav Award for pioneering dairy revolution

REGIONAL, March 11, 2025: The Assam government announced the decision to confer the Assam Gaurav Award to Bharat Kalita, a dairy farmer and president of Kamdhenu Dugdha Utpadak Samabay Samiti in Bajali, recognising the important role of farmers in the state’s milk revolution. This dairy cooperative, part of the West Assam Milk Producers’ Co-operative Union Ltd (WAMUL) and branded as Purabi Dairy.
Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Bharat Kalita for his contributions.
Bharat Kalita has been honoured for his significant impact on the milk revolution, earning recognition similar to that of Kurien, a key figure in India's dairy industry. Last year, the cooperative won the National Gopal Ratna Award for Best Dairy Cooperative Society under the Special NER category from the Central government.
Since its start in 2007, the cooperative's milk collection has grown from 70 litters to 4,500-7,000 litters daily.
Kalita expressed gratitude for the award and credited it to Purabi Dairy as well as the support of fellow dairy farmers. WAMUL leaders praised Kalita’s dedication and leadership to transforming the dairy sector in Bajali.
