SOUTH ASIA, August 04, 2024: A new wave of violence in Bangladesh resulted in the deaths of at least 93 people, including 14 policemen and left hundreds injured. The protesters, who have taken to the streets once again to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and local media, have reported fatalities in Dhaka and various districts.
A brutal attack on the police took place at the Enayetpur police station in Sirajganj district, where 13 police personnel were lynched and the station was set on fire. In another incident, a police officer was killed in Comilla.
The ongoing protests stem from previous demonstrations in July, which began with students calling for an end to the quota system for government jobs. Hasina has labelled the protesters as criminals and has called for harsh measures to be taken against them.
The government has blocked internet access and imposed a shoot-on-sight curfew, leading to the arrest of over 11,000 people in recent weeks. On Sunday evening, the government re-imposed a curfew for an indefinite period and also banned internet access.
The army has been deployed to patrol the streets of major cities and towns in the country. The media in Bangladesh has described the situation as "volatile".
The protesters have advanced their planned 'March to Dhaka' protest from Tuesday to Monday and are now calling for "non-cooperation" urging people to refuse to pay taxes and utility bills as well as not showing up for work.
