Earlier, when the country's people had to look to ships to satisfy their hunger, including from America, scientist Swaminathan played an important role in making India not only self-sufficient in agriculture but also a country capable of producing surplus food.
The bust of this famous agricultural scientist, Dr MS Swaminathan, was ceremonially inaugurated at the State Agriculture Research Station in the AD Nagar area of the capital, Agartala. The ceremonial unveiling of the statute on Wednesday was attended by the state government's Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Lal Nath, West Tripura Zilla Parishad President Bishwajit Shil, MLA Meena Rani Sarkar, Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Secretary Apurba Roy, Director of the Department Dr Fani Bhushan Jamatia, Joint Director Uttam Saha and others.
After welcoming the guests, the programme got formally started by watering the saplings. Then two farmers from the state were felicitated. Besides, 10 farmers were given soil health cards. Along with this, a documentary on Swaminathan's work was shown.
Speaking at the event, Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that Swaminathan has connected agriculture with science. Although he worked for many years to bring about a green revolution in the country's agriculture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given due respect to his work and given the most importance. Because Narendra Modi has given the most importance to connecting agriculture and science, Modi has given the most importance to bringing technology from the laboratory to the agricultural field. These words were said by Dr Swaminathan many years ago.
The Minister also said that Dr Swaminathan brought India's first green revolution, then came the white revolution, through which the country had become self-sufficient in milk. Then came the blue revolution, through which the country has become self-sufficient in fish and is also being exported abroad.
The country is still dependent on edible oil.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to make the country self-sufficient in oil by calling for a yellow revolution. He said that by 2030, 70 percent of the edible oil required in India will be produced in the country, Minister stated.
Swaminathan's memory and ideals will light the way to make the farming community self-reliant and prosperous. The minister also expressed the opinion that this initiative will further inspire the next generation to engage in research and development in the field of agriculture.
