SOUTH ASIA, August 02, 2024: A new wave of unrest has erupted in Bangladesh Friday just a week after anti-job quota protests triggered riots that resulted in the death of 210 people (Source: Prothom Alo) and injuries to hundreds more. In the latest round of protests, two people, including a policeman, have died.
Thousands of protesters have gathered in Dhaka to demand justice for the victims and protest against the government. In the Uttara neighborhood of Dhaka, police and students clashed, with security officers using tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the protesters.
In Khulna, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring 50 people. One policeman died after being attacked by the protesters.
In Habiganj, a man died and 50 others were injured in an arson attack on a local office of the ruling Awami League party. In Chittagong, hundreds of protesters set a roadside police guard post on fire.
The student protests, which initially began as a peaceful demonstration against a quota system, have now evolved into an unprecedented challenge and rebellion against Hasina, whose 15-year-long dominance over the country is now being tested.
