REGIONAL: On a day-long workshop organized by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) at its Assam Regional Office, stakeholders addressed critical issues related to combating cyber-enabled and Know Your Customer (KYC) frauds, alongside investment and treasury management, for Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) and State Cooperative Banks (StCBs) in the North-Eastern Region. The programme aimed to enhance cybersecurity frameworks and risk management practices among Rural Financial Institutions (RFIs).
The event featured Harmeet Singh, Director General of Police, Assam, as the Chief Guest, who initiated the proceedings with a symbolic tree plantation, highlighting NABARD's commitment to sustainability. Loken Das, Chief General Manager of NABARD, welcomed dignitaries and stressed the importance of cultivating cyber-resilience and awareness among bank personnel, particularly at the branch level.
Akhilesh Kumar Singh, emphasized the need for collaboration between banks and law enforcement to effectively address cybercrime, noting that timely reporting and information sharing could mitigate the effects of such frauds. The keynote address by the Director General of Police highlighted the urgency of adapting to evolving cyber threats and establishing coordinated efforts between Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and financial institutions to protect rural customers.
Domain experts from CSITE, NABARD's Head Office in Mumbai, led by Dr Nalin K Rai, provided valuable insights on regulatory compliance, KYC/Anti-Money Laundering (AML) frameworks, and best practices. Officials from the Assam Police's Cyber Crime Cell emphasized the criticality of acting swiftly within the "golden period" of 24-48 hours to block fraudulent transactions.
Senior officials from SBI DFHI Ltd. also conducted sessions on investment and treasury management.
The workshop concluded with an interactive session and valedictory remarks from Shri Sunil Kumar Jha, Deputy General Manager of NABARD's Assam Regional Office. Overall, the event underscored NABARD's commitment to equipping RFIs in the NE Region with knowledge and tools essential for fostering a secure, resilient and inclusive rural financial ecosystem.
