NATIONAL: The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in India has launched the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal facilitating citizens in reporting lost or stolen mobile handsets. This initiative aids in tracking and recovering devices while preventing their misuse, thus improving public safety and security.
The portal offers features that allow users to block lost phones, track them if found on telecom networks and unblock them if recovered. The effectiveness of CEIR is attributed to collaboration among Telecom Service Providers (TSPs), state police, and increased public awareness.
This system not only protects consumers but also helps mitigate mobile-related cybercrime and combat illegal handset trading, strengthening national digital security. The DoT encouraged citizens to report mobile theft or loss promptly through the CEIR portal.
It said it is dedicated to expanding digital public services to ensure a secure telecom environment for all citizens.
