UGC extends PhD as mandatory requirement

NEW DELHI, October 14 2021: University Grants Commission has extended PhD as mandatory requirement for appointment of Assistant Professors in Departments of Universities to July 1 2023.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations 2018 stipulates that PhD degree shall be mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professors in Universities from July 1 2021.
The notification issued by Secretary of UGC Prof Ranjish Jain vide F. No. 9-1/ 2010 (PS/Misc) pt. Vol- II dated October 12 2021 stated in view of Covid-19 pandemic, the UGC had decided to extend the date of applicability of Ph. D as mandatory qualification for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors from July 1 2021 to July 1 2023.
The Gazette of India extraordinary Part III- Section 4 published by Authority, New Delhi, on October 12 2021 asserted that the PhD degree shall be a mandatory qualification for direct recruitment to the post Assistant Professor in Departments of the Universities with effect from July 1 2023.
