REGIONAL, January 12, 2024: The Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma Athletics Stadium built at a cost of Rs 16.02 crore at Tura, has been inaugurated Friday. This state-of-the-art stadium, named after the renowned freedom fighter Pa Togan Sangma, serves as a tribute to his athletic prowess and an inspiration for young athletes to pursue their dreams.
The stadium boasts an eight-lane synthetic athletic track that meets international standards, as well as an administrative block. Its primary purpose is to promote athletic excellence and support the aspirations of future champions.
In 2024, Tura will proudly host the 5th Meghalaya Games, demonstrating its readiness to host national sporting events. The stadium has already successfully hosted the North East Olympics, welcoming over 4000 athletes from 8 states.
The government of Meghalaya is investing heavily in grassroots sports, with plans to construct over 200 new sports facilities at an estimated cost of Rs 500 crores. The Pa Togan Nengminja Athletics Stadium is a catalyst for discovering and developing athletic talent, as demonstrated by the STAR programme, which evaluates athletes according to international standards in various disciplines.
