National polls: Bangladesh EC restores 56 rejected candidacies
Announced will continue to hear appeals until December 15

DHAKA, December 10 2023: Bangladesh Election Commission reinstated the candidacy of 56 aspirants who were initially disqualified for the 12th general elections after reviewing their appeals. Parliamentary election in the country is slated for January 7 2024.
The majority of the candidates whose appeals were approved were independents, including Abdus Salam who is contesting from Chattogram-8. Awami League nominee Nasirul Islam Khan's candidacy for Kishoreganj-3 has also been restored, allowing him to compete against Jatiya Party General Secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu.
The commission will continue to hear appeals until December 15. A total of 29 parties and 2,712 candidates are expected to participate in parliamentary polls.
Major opposition political parties including BNP have announced their boycott polls for not conceding their demand for elections under a caretaker neutral government. They said election in present form will be reduced to a farse.
