GUWAHATI, December 13, 2019: The scheduled summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at Guwahati cancelled due to violent situation in Guwahati and others parts of Assam.
Guwahati and other major towns in the state have been under curfew and preventive restrictions in wake of unprecedented violence that led to death of two protestors in police firing and scores of people were injured during anti Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) protests in the state.
The bill has now become an act after gaining assent of both houses of parliament.
Army and paramilitary columns have been deployed in strength across Assam.
The annual India-Japan summit involving prime ministers of both countries were slated in Guwahati between December 15 and 17.
Assam government sources on Friday said situation was gradually returning to normalcy and curfew and restrictions would be eased in a phased manner.
