NEW DELHI, February 12, 2024: Former Indian Navy officers have returned home after being released from a jail in Qatar. The government hailed the release as a significant diplomatic victory for India.
The continuous efforts of the Modi government, the death sentences of the Indians were commuted to life imprisonment. Now, they have been safely returned to India.
The group includes Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal and Sailor Ragesh.
They were arrested in August 2022 and have been in jail since then. On October 26, 2023, the Qatari court sentenced all eight Indians to death under charges that were not made public.
It is worth noting that during the COP28 summit, Prime Minister Modi met with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and discussed the issue. As a result, capital punishment was commuted in December.
The Navy veterans, now back in the country, expressed their gratitude to the government for securing their release.
