AGARTALA, July 09 2020: Indigenous Peoples Front of Tripura (IPFT) Thursday enforced a 24-hour general strike in geographical jurisdiction of the TTAADC (Tripura Tribal Areas Automatic District Council). The strike called to demand release of an arrested party worker has been peaceful amid heavy security presence in vulnerable places like Khumulwng, headquarters of the TTAADC.
The worker, Prabir Debbarma, was arrested in connection with burning of a BJP party office at Khumulwng, headquarters of the TTAADC, 18 km from here, early this week.
The incident saw rife in tension between two parties in the area.
Hundreds of IPFT supporters staged picketing in Khumulwng where the strike evoked maximum response. They blocked the roads with burning tyres.
BJP meanwhile slammed the IPFT for flexing muscle in guise of agitation. Senior leaders of the party blamed it for allegedly trying to unnecessary fuel tension during Covid-19 pandemic.
Responding to a query on demand of release of arrested IPFT worker, they said it is job of the police to investigate and prosecute anyone accused of committing a crime.
Despite differences, IPFT asserted that it would continue to be part of BJP led coalition government in the state.
