AGARTALA, October 24 2020: A six member delegation of the IPFT has met BJP President JP Nadda in Delhi and placed a charter of demands important of which is party’s intention to contest in majority number of seats in elections to the tribal autonomous district council slated later this year.
The delegation led by tribal welfare minister Mevar Kumar Jamatia went to Delhi to meet central government leaders as well as top brass of BJP. Augmentation of the power and authority of the tribal autonomous district council by amending a provision of the constitution was said to be a major plank of the IPFT.
The party however found to be bargaining over seat adjustments and during a meeting with Nadda the delegation sought to contest in 22 of the 28 seats in the tribal council. It argued that the party had agreed on contesting less number of seats under an assurance from the BJP of ‘vice versa’ formula in tribal council elections.
Elections to the council scheduled in May last, were deferred owing to Covid-19 pandemic. Tenure of the elected committee of the council ended on May 17 and the Governor appointed Administrator was subsequently appointed to run the council till elections are held.
