Discussed the overall scenario of the power sector in the NER states

REGIONAL, July 09, 2024: The Power Ministers of the North Eastern Region (NER) states of Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura held a conference in Guwahati Tuesday to discuss the overall scenario of the power sector in the NER states, focusing on hydropower generation, power transmission and distribution. The conference reviewed the progress of the states in various schemes of the Indian government, such as the North-Eastern Region Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP).
The Government of India is committed to providing electricity access to un-electrified habitations and households throughout the country. To achieve this goal, states have been requested to prioritize the completion of household electrification projects, which were sanctioned under the Rural Domestic Solar Scheme (RDSS) in a mission-oriented manner.
This includes the electrification of households belonging to the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in Tripura.
Comprehensive Scheme for Strengthening of Transmission & Distribution Systems in Sikkim, and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS). The Additional Secretary (Power) emphasized the government's commitment to ensuring reliable and quality power supply to consumers. Currently, 37 hydropower projects (HEPs) with 15 GW capacities are under construction, with plans to add another 50 GW in the next five years.
The Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) has sanctioned Distribution Infrastructure and Smart Metering works for these states, with a total outlay of Rs 13,147 Crores. The financial viability of DISCOMs plays a crucial role in the overall transformation of the sector.
Manohar Lal, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, welcomed all dignitaries and highlighted the joint efforts needed for achieving the goals of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
