REGIONAL, July 02, 2025: The Bio-Resources Development Center (BRDC) in Meghalaya has conducted several programmes for Traditional Healers including documentation, training and capacity building. One such programme is the Voluntary Certification Scheme for Traditional Community Healthcare Providers (VCSTCHP) of the Quality Council of India (QCI).
This certification program, held at the Secretariat Wellness Center in Shillong, recognises the contributions of these healers to Meghalaya's rich heritage and ancestral wisdom. Nine Traditional Community Healthcare Providers (TCHPs) from Meghalaya have been certified under ISO/IEC 17024:2012 standards, demonstrating their expertise in treating common ailments like jaundice, traditional bone setting, and arthritis.
The certification is a significant step towards institutional recognition of traditional knowledge and paves the way for more traditional healers in the state to be brought under this quality certification framework in the future. The certification legitimises the contributions of Traditional Healers and integrates them into the state's healthcare framework, particularly in Traditional Bone Setting practices.
The event held Wednesday was graced by Dr Joram Beda, Commissioner & Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Meghalaya and Director, AYUSH. He commended the roles of BRDC and NECU in streamlining this traditional heritage.
The representatives of Khasi, Jaintia, Ri bhoi and Garo Hills regions shared their experience at the event.
