AGARTALA, May 15, 2024: The Ministry of Railways aims to complete the electrification of railway tracks in Tripura by the end of this year. According to Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member of the Infrastructure of the Railway Board, 96% of the railway lines have already been electrified under this project.
On Wednesday, Khandelwal and senior officials from the North East Frontier Railway and Eastern Railways inspected the Nischintapur railway station, located on the border of India and Bangladesh in Tripura. This station is an important part of the Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) railway project, which is nearing completion.
Khandelwal expressed hope that passenger and freight trains will soon be able to run through this cross border railway connectivity. He emphasised the importance of rail connectivity for economic development and mutual benefits for both countries.
However, he expressed concerns about the necessary clearances and modalities that need to be addressed before the project can begin operations. Khandelwal also mentioned that the railway network in India is constantly expanding, with 300 to 400 kms of new track being laid every year.
Almost all states in the country are now connected by railways, except for one state where efforts are being made to overcome bottlenecks, he added.
