AGARTALA, January 20 2023: In first major move to ensure its ‘Zero Poll Violence’ motto, the Election Commission of India (ECI) Friday ordered suspension and removal of a DSP rank officer who was posted as the SDPO of Jirania subdivision in west Tripura. It also ordered immediate removal of the Officer-In-Charge of two police station of the subdivision for serious lapses that resulted in a clash between supporters of the BJP and Congress on Wednesday.
The assembly elections in Tripura will be held on February 16 and results will be simultaneously declared with Nagaland and Meghalaya where elections are due on March 2.
To ensure a complete grip on the situation, the election commission also appointed three Special Observers and asked them to reach Tripura immediately to oversee proper deployment of the central forces and enforcement of the measures already in place.
The commission also sought explanation from Tripura Chief Secretary JK Sinha and DGP Amitabh Ranjan over reports of violence despite presence of central forces in strength. It wondered how the incidents are taking place despite strict directions during visit of the full bench to the state and thereafter.
