MOREH, January 10 2024: Lieutenant General Pradeep Chandran Nair, Director General of Assam Rifles, visited Moreh Wednesday in response to the current heightened security situation and ongoing attacks on Security Forces. During his visit, he was briefed by Sect Cdr Brig VP Yadav on the current security situation in the area.
Lt Gen Nair also met with members of various Civil Society organisations, including the Hill Tribe Council, Kuki Students Organisation, Kuki Women's Union, Human Rights Moreh, Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal, Tamil Sangam, Gorkha Samaj Samiti and Manipur Muslims Council. Moreh, a township located on the Indo-Myanmar border in Manipur, has experienced a surge in violence since December 2023.
The DGAR discussed the concerns faced by these groups and emphasised the need for peace and unity in Moreh. He acknowledged the unique diversity of Moreh, with people from various communities such as Kuki, Meitei, Naga, Tamil, Pangal, Gorkha and Sikh living together in harmony for decades.
However, the recent months of conflict, preceded by two years of the Covid-19 pandemic, have greatly affected the lives of children and youth, putting their future at risk. Gen Nair urged the people of Moreh, especially women, to actively work towards restoring peace and resolving their grievances.
He also cautioned all civil society groups to inform those carrying weapons that the Central Security Forces will respond appropriately if provoked or fired upon. Restoring peace is in everyone's best interest and is the responsibility of all. The DGAR assured that Assam Rifles will continue to be "Friends of the North East" even in the most challenging situations.
The purpose of the DGAR's visit was to improve coordination among Civil Society groups and establish open communication channels between Security Forces and Civil Society.
