Cyclone Amphan kills 86 in eastern India, Bangladesh

AGARTALA, May 21 2020: Super Cyclone ‘Amphan’ has left trails of destruction in two states in eastern India and neighbouring Bangladesh
It made a landfall at 2:30 pm Wednesday with speeds of 155-165 km per hour strengthening up to 185 km per hour. It however lost intensity Thursday and turned into land depression.
Indian officials said 72 people were killed in West Bengal. Two died in Odisha.
Situation in Bangladesh is also worse where 12 people were reportedly killed.
Most of the victims died after getting hit by falling trees or after getting electrocuted.
The cyclone coupled with incessant rains also created flood situation in several parts of West Bengal and Bangladesh. In Bangladesh river embankment at three places extensively damaged and inflow of waters submerged many villages.
Two people have also died in , reports said.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has been monitoring the situation from her office said that damages were severe and assessment may not be possible before two three days.
