Custodial death: magisterial probe begins

AGARTALA, January 16, 2020: Magisterial probe got underway Thursday into death of an accused in the custody of west Agartala police station. West Tripura District Magistrate Dr Sandeep Mahatme led inquiry team visited the police station and interviewed officers and personnel.
Magisterial probe was constituted at intervention of Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb who took strong exception to the custodial death of Sushanta Ghosh at the police station.
The Crime Branch also opened probe into the incident.
Police claimed that the accused who was picked up from Lankamura locality here in connection with investigation in a case relating to sensational ATM hacking in Agartala committed suicide in the toilet attached with the lockup.
Sushanta Ghosh, 38, was arrested in connection with ATM hacking casa from his home at Lankamura in Agartala on Saturday. When produced, the court sanctioned his one day remand in police custody.
Four foreign nationals – two Turkish and two Bangladeshis – were arrested for snooping down on different ATM booths in Agartala in November last and siphoned nearly one crore rupees of over 60 customers with help of skimming devices.
The Cyber Crime Branch under Tripura police has been investigating ATM hacking case registered under different sections of IPC and IT Act.
The death of the youth in police custody triggered tension in Lankamura locality on Sunday. Angry residents even attacked a policeman and injured him seriously.
