Custodial death: Leaders beeline to console family

AGARTALA, January 13, 2020: Leaders across political divide Monday made beeline to console family of Sushanta Ghosh who died under mysterious circumstances in custody of west Agartala police station before dawn on Sunday. Former Chief Minister and CPI(M) veteran Manik Sarkar also showed up to meet grieving family members at Lankamrua here.
Local MLA from BJP Dr Dilip Das assured help from the government, stopped from making any specific commitment. Victim’s parents told him that they want nothing except punishment of guilty police men who allegedly responsible for death of Sushanta.
Police insisted that the accused who was picked up in connection with investigation in a case relating to sensational ATM hacking in Agartala committed suicide in the toilet attached with the lockup.
Sushanta Ghosh, 38, was arrested from his home at Lankamura in Agartala on Saturday. When produced the court sanctioned his one day remand in police custody.
The Crime Branch (CB) officials interrogated him in the night few hours before his death.
Four foreign nationals – two Turkish and two Bangladeshis – were arrested for snooping down on different ATM booths in Agartala in November last and siphoned nearly one crore rupees of over 60 customers with help of skimming devices.
Chief Minister already ordered the magisterial probe into the custodial death. He even commented on his strict stance in matters related to law and order.
The Crime Branch under Tripura police has been investigating ATM hacking case registered under different sections of IT Act.
The death of the youth in police custody triggered tension in Lankamura locality on Sunday. Angry residents even attacked a policeman and injured him seriously.
