AGARTALA, July 17, 2025: Tripura Chief Minister, Dr Manik Saha highlighted the importance of creating awareness to prevent child marriages, which is a bane in society. He stressed that many influential individuals are involved in the drug trade for financial gain, but they cannot escape the law.
Dr Saha was speaking after inaugurating an awareness programme under the Drug-Free India Campaign for the prevention of child marriage at the Gandhigram Higher Secondary School grounds in Bamutia of West district Thursday.
Chief Minister Dr Saha also called for more awareness about thalassemia, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in the state. He urged agencies and the police to not give concessions to those involved in the drug trade as they are causing harm to themselves and society as well.
Another concern is child marriage, Dr Saha said, calling on everyone to raise awareness of it and encourage others to do the same. He also mentioned a girl from a minority community who received an award from the President of India for protesting against child marriage.
“The government is considering registering marriages before solemnising social marriages requiring girls to complete the age of 18 and boys to complete the age of 21 for marriage. Birth certificates will be made mandatory to prevent child marriage,” he stated.
The event was attended by several political personalities, civil and police officials, activists, students and local residents.
