AGARTALA, June 07 2023: Veteran politician and former MLA Subal Bhowmik is expected to get BJP’s nomination to contest from the Dhanpur assembly constituency in Sepahijala district which earlier fell vacant due to resignation of Pratima Bhoumik. The election commission is expected to issue notification for the by-election for Tripura this month.
Subal Bhowmik re-joined the BJP ahead of state’s assembly elections held in February last. Pratima Bhoumik who successfully contested from Dhanpur opted to continue as MoS in the union government and relinquished the seat.
She had won by a convincing margin from the constituency.
The BJP top brass is reportedly considering the name of Bhowmik after checking the winability of all shortlisted candidates. The ruling BJP in Tripura at present has 32 MLAs and its ally IPFT one, thus the party is desperate to register a win in Dhanpur.
The constituency has a typical demographic profile as Bengali Hindus, Bengali Muslims and the indigenous population almost have equal concentration. Subal Bhowmik had earlier won from Sonamura, which has been Dhanpur’s neighbouring assembly segment.
If Bhowmik wins, his chance of getting absorbed in the state cabinet is enormous considering his seniority and political competence.
