Bereaved father moves HC over son’s custodial death

AGARTALA, February 25, 2020: The High Court of Tripura has opened hearing on a writ petition with case matter of a custodial death of an accused in west Agartala police station. Parimal Ghosh, father of Sushanta Ghosh, who was found hanging at the lockup on January 13 this year.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Akil Qureshi ordered Investigation Officer (IO) to personally appear in next date of hearing. The bench also expressed displeasure over slow progress in the investigation.
Tripura government earlier ordered Magisterial Probe into the gruesome incident. West Tripura district magistrate Dr Sandeep Mahatme visited the police station for sake of probe.
Police have been claiming that the accused picked up in connection with investigation in a case relating to sensational ATM hacking in Agartala committed suicide in the toilet attached with the cell.
Sushanta Ghosh, 38, was arrested from his home at Lankamura in Agartala on Saturday. When produced the court sanctioned his one day remand in police custody.
The Crime Branch (CB) officials interrogated him in the night few hours before his death.
Four foreign nationals – two Turkish and two Bangladeshis – were arrested for snooping down on different ATM booths in Agartala in November last and siphoned nearly one crore rupees of over 60 customers with help of skimming devices.
Chief Minister already ordered the magisterial probe into the custodial death. He even commented on his strict stance in matters related to law and order.
The Crime Branch under Tripura police has been investigating ATM hacking case registered under different sections of IT Act and IPC.
