AGARTALA, December 02 2023: A moderate earthquake shook Tripura and Bangladesh region Saturday causing damages to houses, but no casualties to life. The rescue and emergency services have been put on alert in view of the tremor that struck at 9. 35 am.
There is however confusion over the magnitude of the tremor with the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) putting it at 5.8. The other agency like the United States Geological Survey (USGS) measured it as 5.5 magnitudes.
The epicentre was detected at about 8 km east of Ramganj in Bangladesh district of Lakshmipur. This has raised an alarm as most of the earlier source of tremors in the region was found to be in northeast India, Myanmar or Himalayas.
Though tremor was felt in Bangladesh and adjacent Tripura in India, making people panic stricken, no casualties were reported. Tripura government reported complete or partial damage of 12 houses in the state's Sepahijala and Unakoti districts.
The rescue and emergency services in the entire region have been put under alert following the earthquake.
