UN to deploy observers in poll bound Bangladesh

By IH News Desk Jan 06, 2026 64
GLOBAL: The United Nations has announced it will not deploy election observers for the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh scheduled for next month.

UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric said UN typically sends observers only with a mandate from the General Assembly or the Security Council, although there is a possibility for the UN office in Dhaka to provide technical support if approved separately.

In another development Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has raised concerns regarding the Election Commission's decision to extend stay facilities for foreign observers, labeling it as imprudent and discriminatory.

It lamented that the decision for not extending similar support to domestic observers, cautioning that the funding of foreign observers might lead to conflicts of interest and potentially compromise the election's credibility and impartiality.
