GLOBAL: Tarique Rahman has been officially named the new chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) marking a significant transition to the next generation of its founding family.
The announcement was made by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir after a meeting of the party's National Standing Committee at Dhaka Friday night.
This confirmation solidifies Tarique's de facto leadership role that which he has held since 2018, when his mother, former Prime Minister and party Chief Khaleda Zia, was jailed.
The decision reflects dynastic continuity within the party in Bangladesh as it prepares for an upcoming parliamentary election battle slated for February 12.
