GLOBAL: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. She breathed last at the age of 80 at a private hospital in Dhaka Tuesday morning.

Modi stated that he was deeply saddened by the news and remembered the significant contributions of Bangladesh's first Prime Minister towards the development of the country and the strong relationship between India and Bangladesh. He also mentioned that her vision and legacy will continue to guide the partnership between the two nations.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will represent India at the funeral of Bangladesh's former Prime Minister slated for Wednesday. This will be the first ministerial visit from India to Bangladesh since August 5 of last year, when deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left the country in the wake of violent protests.

In contrast, Pakistan's Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has canceled his earlier announcement to travel to Dhaka and has announced that Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the speaker of the Pakistan National Assembly, will attend the funeral in his place. The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka had previously stated that Ishaq Dar himself would be attending the funeral.

Foreign Ministers and delegates from Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and the Maldives will also be present at the last rites of Khaleda Zia.
