AGARTALA: Tension erupted in the Kalamchara area of Tripura's Sepahijala district during an operation carried out by police and paramilitary forces targeting illegal cannabis cultivation Monday. Irate villagers responded to the operation by pelting stones and bricks at troops resulting in injuries to four security personnel including driver of an Assam Rifles vehicle.
As the situation escalated, the Assam Rifles fired approximately forty rounds into the air to disperse the angry crowd. This action allegedly incited further unrest compelling the Assam Rifles to withdraw from the scene.
Following the incident, the atmosphere remains tense, prompting the deployment of additional police and security forces. The administration is closely monitoring the situation and ensuring that appropriate measures are in place to maintain law and order although no official statement has been made about potential arrests related to the clashes.
