REGIONAL, November 01, 2025: Reverend JJM Nichols Roy, a prominent political visionary, constitutional architect and religious reformer from Northeast India was honoured on his 66th death anniversary at the Lariti International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture (LICPAC). The JJ M Nichols Roy Memorial Society organised the event, which included a prayer and tribute ceremony chaired by Ransom Sutnga.

Speakers included Robert Dkhar, H Suting, and Rev B Pohsngap. The ceremony concluded with wreaths and floral tributes from members and dignitaries in honor of the late leader.

Richols was remembered as a significant constitutional thinker of India's freedom and post-independence era. He was the principal architect of the Sixth Schedule to the Indian Constitution, designed to protect the rights, identity and self-governance of indigenous tribal communities in the Northeast.

His legacy is also relevant in Ladakh, where environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk and other local leaders demand the implementation of Sixth Schedule provisions for tribal and ecological rights.

The memorial also addressed the controversy surrounding the statue and monument of Rev Nichols Roy, which had been alleged to be on the verge of collapse and broken. The Department of Arts and Culture and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council took corrective action and the restoration work was completed in time for the 66th death anniversary observance.
