SHILLONG: Eleven-year-old Shelevah N Jyrwa from Laimer, Upper Shillong, was crowned the winner of Sur Kynud Season 4 during the grand finale held on Thursday evening at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Laitumkhrah, Shillong.
The event was graced by M Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA of East Shillong; Fr Fidel Orendain, General Councillor from Rome; Fr John Zosiama, Provincial of the Shillong Province; along with several priests from South Asia, other religious leaders, and the parents and families of the five participants.
The grand finale was organized by Don Bosco Media Network Television (DBMNTV) under the leadership of Fr Michael Makri, Director. A total of eight young contestants reached the final round, competing for the top prize of ₹1 lakh.
Since the inception of the competition, DBMNTV, through specially appointed coaches including Miss Lapdiang and Miss Kheiñkor, has provided systematic training to nurture and develop the musical talents of participating youth.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lyngdoh praised the organizers of Sur Kynud, noting that initiatives undertaken by the Salesians consistently uphold high standards, particularly in youth development. She also commended Don Bosco Youth Centre Shillong for creating a meaningful platform for young people to showcase their talents.
“It is through such competitions, whether in music or sports, that young people learn to work hard and strive toward their goals,” she said.
In his address, Fr Michael Makri attributed the program’s success to the physical and spiritual support of the superiors, donors—including the state government—and well-wishers. He also expressed gratitude to the parents for their steadfast support of their children throughout the competition.
During the event, the Cecilia Memorial Award was presented to Br Sniawshngain Papang, while the DBMNTV Youth Icon Award 2025 was conferred on Herbert Kharkongor, Superintendent of Police, West Khasi Hills. Mementos were also distributed to the judges.
As in previous years, the winners of the tournament, in addition to receiving cash prizes of up to ₹1 lakh, will also be given opportunities to participate in major national and international competitions.
