AGARTALA, October 4, 2019: First flyover in Agartala city which ran into series of controversies owing to construction scams was opened for public use on Friday. There was no formal programme to mark the occasion except students of the government run Blind School were invited to inaugurate.
Sources said Chief Minister discouraged any formal opening involving government faces in view of serious corruption charges leveled against five former senior PWD officials including two retired Chief Engineers.
A former official to the rank of Additional Chief Engineer was arrested and currently in jail while rest named in the Charge Sheet submitted by the Crime Branch (CB) managed to secure bail.
CB was entrusted the probe over manipulation and bribe charges over construction of the flyover and a bridge in the city- both awarded to Hyderabad based Nagarjuna Construction Company. CPI(M) veteran and former PWD Minister Badal Choudhury was twice questioned in connection with the investigation.
