HM holds meeting to review flood management preparedness

NATIONAL, June 10, 2025: Union Home Minister Amit Shah held a meeting in New Delhi Tuesday to review flood management preparedness in India. He discussed long-term measures to mitigate flood threats and the steps taken in a previous meeting.
Shah emphasized the use of space technology by central agencies for flood control and water management. “Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, India's disaster management is moving forward with a "Zero Casualty Approach," he opined.
He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to coordinate with State Disaster Management Authorities (SDMAs) and District Disaster Management Authorities (DDMAs) for ensuring early warning alerts are disseminated to grassroots levels. He also urged states and Union Territories to implement advisories issued by NDMA for flood management.
The Home Minister appreciated the Central Water Commission (CWC) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) for increasing the time limit for flood forecasting and advised the Jal Shakti Ministry, NDMA and National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) to closely monitor glacial lakes and take timely action in case of outbursts.
He also emphasised the need for uniform design changes in state and district highways to incorporate highway drainage systems into road construction designs. He suggested that the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), IMD and other departments should jointly organize a conference to discuss floods, space, and other aspects.
