REGIONAL, September 23, 2024: A one-day workshop on "Fact-Checking and Verification" was held at Nagaland University's Department of Journalism and Mass Communication. The workshop was conducted by Dr Moalemba Jamir, Associate Editor of The Morung Express and certified Google News Initiative (GNI) India Training Network Trainer.
The objective was to educate journalists and media persons against misinformation. Dr Jamir highlighted the challenges of countering the spread of fake news and led an exercise to test the group's awareness of false information.
He highlighted the tricks used by individuals to spread false information such as whataboutism, name-calling, emotional language and conspiracy theories as well as the features of fake news itself such as propaganda and clickbait. Dr Jamir also demonstrated how to validate visual information using tools like Google Reverse Image Search, Invid tool, Google Transcribe and Pinpoint.
He concluded that the best practices for fact checking include using various methods for verification, cross-checking information from different sources, critically assessing material, taking context and metadata into account, and verifying information before sharing.
He also emphasised that AI is useful but not always accurate and should be used as a tool not a master's for fact checking. The GNI India Training Network, led by Google, Internews and Data LEADS has trained over 71,000 professionals across India since its inception in 2018.
Dr Moalemba conducted workshops in Nagaland to enhance fact-checking, verification and related skills with journalists and media students.
