REGIONAL, February 26, 2025: The Press Club of Assam (PCA) has expressed concerns that the Press Council of India (PCI), the country's statutory and quasi-judicial body to safeguard press freedom, has been non-functional for nearly five months. The PCI, an autonomous body established in 1966 to preserve press freedom and improve newspaper and news agency standards, has been criticised for its delay in forming a new council.
The Mumbai Press Club (MPC) has earlier accused the PCI of attempting to oust two important journalist bodies, the MPC and Editors Guild of India, from their representation. The MPC has also requested intervention from Union Information & Broadcasting Minister to resolve contentious.
The PCI, which has a chairman and 28 members, is responsible for adjudicating complaints against newspapers, news agencies and editors as well as working journalists. It is also empowered to make observations if any authority, including the government, interferes with the guaranteed freedom of the press.
