AGARTALA, July 10 2020: The transit route through watery way linking mainland of India and Tripura would be operational with arrival of a small cargo vessel at Sonamura jetty on July 18. State’s Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb Friday informed that the vessel would start from Haldia port in West Bengal with iron rod consignment on July 14 and pass through Bangladesh to enter Gomati river of the state.
The river stretch between Sonamura and Daudkhandi in Bangladesh has been designated as new protocol route of Indo-Bangla inland waterways in the agreement signed between both countries in May last.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) took just 10 days to complete construction of the jetty at the border point of river at Sonamura, 49-km south of Agartala.
Chief Minster Deb lauded the protocol as well as arrangements completed in a shortest possible time to open the waterway route. He ushered hope that the waterway would develop to its maximum limit to economically benefit the state and that of northeast India.
