24 rescued children return home from Chikkaballapur in Karnataka
SCPCR Chairperson Agatha Sangma felt need to prevent further incidents

REGIONAL, December 02, 2025: The Directorate of Social Welfare at Shillong, Meghalaya, Tuesday received 24 children rescued from Chikkaballapur district in Karnataka amidst concerns over their prior unregulated movement. Welcoming the children SCPCR Chairperson Agatha Sangma highlighted the need for formal procedures to prevent further incidents advocating for a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for child movements.
This SOP would require documentation, verification of institutions and prior notice to District Child Protection Officers to enhance child welfare tracking. Sangma stressed the importance of parental awareness regarding their children's whereabouts.
The Director of Social Welfare Camelia Doreen Lyngwa pointed out that many affected children come from marginalized families and underlined the need for safe housing. Technology was noted to be vital in ensuring the children's safe return.
