Venezuela: Operation Amistad successfully concludes
NEW DELHI: Operation Amistad has successfully concluded with the return of the Indian contingent to New Delhi from Venezuela. This mission, focused on Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response, was initiated following the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela that killed hundreds, injured thousands and destructed scores of buildings.
Venezuela's Acting President Delcy Rodríguez expressed gratitude toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi for India's prompt support and solidarity during this crisis.
On June 26, the Indian Air Force deployed two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft carrying a 41-member team from the Indian Army’s 60 Para Field Hospital Unit, which included various medical specialists such as surgeons, anaesthesiologists, orthopaedic surgeons, and paramedics, as well as support staff. The mission also provided critical resources, including two BHISHM Cubes—advanced portable mini-hospitals for rapid deployment—6 tons of essential medicines and medical equipment, along with 30 tons of emergency relief supplies that comprised tents, solar lamps, water purifiers and generator sets.
The operation was conducted in close collaboration with the Venezuelan Government, whose assistance facilitated the prompt deployment and effective operation of the Indian Army Field Hospital. Throughout its tenure, the Field Hospital delivered medical care to hundreds affected by the earthquakes, performing over 8,000 medical procedures and laboratory tests, including more than 20 major surgeries.
India has extended its heartfelt appreciation to the Venezuelan Government for their cooperation throughout the mission.
Operation Amistad not only underscores the enduring friendship and solidarity between India and Venezuela but also highlights India's commitment to supporting partner nations during challenging times, embodying the principle of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, or "the world is one family."
