Union Minister JP Nadda visits landslide affected Mon town
REGIONAL: Union Minister of Health & Family Welfare Jagat Prakash Nadda along with Assam's Health Minister Ashok Singhal and Rajya Sabha MP Phangnon Konyak visited the landslide-affected areas in Mon town Wednesday. They inspected locations, particularly at Defence Colony and Techa ward, which were severely impacted by the calamity.
During this visit, Nadda interacted with families affected by the landslide at the Konyak Union Office, expressing his deep sorrow over the incident and assuring the victims that they are not alone as support from both the government and the community is available.
In his remarks, Nadda conveyed the Prime Minister's message of solidarity to the victims' families, recognising the efforts by local administration and organisations such as the Konyak Union, Konyak Students’ Union and Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong in setting up emergency relief camps. He praised the quick response from rescue teams, including the Deputy Commissioner (DC) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who worked diligently to assist those in need.
Deputy Commissioner of Mon, Wennyei Konyak, provided a briefing on the disaster. He highlighted that relentless heavy rainfall had led to floods and multiple landslides, causing extensive damage to roads, bridges and public infrastructure.
This resulted in many villages facing temporary disruptions in connectivity, with some homes suffering significant damage and families being displaced. Additionally, essential services such as power and water supply were impacted. In response, relief camps were established, and distributions of food, drinking water, and medical supplies were organised.
Konyak Union President Yamao Konyak expressed appreciation for the visit, stating it emphasized that Mon is not isolated during these difficult times. Furthermore, Rendemo Shitio, the Assistant Manager (Response & Communication) for the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), presented a detailed report on the damages caused by the monsoon during July 2026. His presentation included data on rainfall amounts particularly noting 83.95 mm recorded on July 19 and a cumulative total of 341 mm by the end of the month.
Video footage showcased the extensive destruction and the impact of the floods and landslides across Mon District encapsulating the disaster's severity and the urgent need for recovery efforts.
