GLASGOW: India achieved a historic milestone in judo at the Commonwealth Games as Asmita Dey and Harsh Singh secured the country's first-ever gold medals in the sport. In addition, Yamini Mourya contributed a silver medal, culminating in India’s best performance in judo since it became a medal sport at the Commonwealth Games in 1990. Overall, India concluded the competition with a total of two golds and one silver medal.
Prior to this event, Indian judokas had consistently claimed medals but had never reached the pinnacle of the podium.
The 23-year-old Asmita Dey, hailing from Tripura, northeast India, made history by becoming the first Indian judoka to earn a gold medal. In the women's -48kg final, she demonstrated remarkable resilience after initially falling behind against Canada's Heidi Quach.
Despite giving up a yuko and facing a penalty early in the match, Asmita managed to rally back, equalizing the score before entering the golden score period, where she decisively scored a yuko to clinch a memorable victory. This achievement not only highlights the growth of judo in India but also signifies a newfound level of success on an international platform.
