Tripura University celebrates its 40th foundation day
AGARTALA: Tripura University, established on October 2, 1987, has been an important institution in the development of higher education in Tripura and the northeast India at large. Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha graced the occasion to mark the 40th foundation day of the university at its campus near here Friday.
Chief Minister lauded the university's role in expanding education, research and community service while outlining goals for future growth. He stated the need to transition the university into a leading center of knowledge and innovation, facilitated by national and international collaborations, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary research.
Dr Saha highlighted the importance of aligning education with societal needs and character building.
He also observed that since 2018, the state government has established seven new degree colleges to enhance access to higher education, including institutions in locations like Old Agartala and Ambassa. Significant legislative moves have been made, such as upgrading the Women's College in Agartala to a university and developing the Tripura Institute of Technology into a State Technical University.
The participation of private institutions in higher education is witnessing a ambitious increase.
On the student support front, the Chief Minister outlined programmes including scholarships for visually impaired students and meritorious female students, the latter benefiting approximately 140 through a scooter initiative. Recruitment efforts for teachers also gained momentum, with the TPSC recommending 74 Assistant Professors, with plans for further appointments and creation of posts ongoing.
