Tripura: Four police officers arrested after major drug haul
AGARTALA: A court in Khowai in Tripura Monday placed three police officers, one of them female, from the Teliamura police station and an officer of the Special Branch (SB), on a 5-day remand in connection to a major drug scandal. The Investigation Officer had requested a 7-day remand, but the court granted a shorter period.
Sources said, another policeman involved in the incident was not mentioned in the case diary, adding to the intrigue. The personnel were presented before the Khowai court under heavy police escort.
The arrests were made following a sensational report by local media that highlighted Teliamura as a central hub for drug trafficking in the Khowai district. The detainees were accused of transferring a seized drug consignment to the smugglers.
This revelation prompted swift action from the state police administration with a senior officer to the rank of DIG and narcotics officials visiting the station post-arrests. The exposure of this shocking misconduct within the police led to the Chief Minister and the Director General of Police ordering strict measures against such corruption ultimately resulting in the arrests.
The arrests of both men and woman in uniform have rattled the state police organisation.
