Tripura CM felicitates CWG gold medal winner Asmita Dey
AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha commended Asmita Dey for her historic achievement as the first judoka from India to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Glasgow suggesting the pride her success brings to both Tripura and the nation. Dr Saha presented Asmita with a cheque for Rs 10 lakh and a land allotment document for her family acknowledging her humble beginnings in Sonaichari village of Belonia subdivision.
Chief Minister presided over a reception ceremony organised by the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports in Agartala Wednesday.
The Chief Minister praised Asmita’s determination and hard work comparing her emergence as a sports icon to that of Deepa Karmakar, Tripura's another pride known as the 'Golden Girl.' He reflected on Asmita’s struggles, including those of her parents and underlined the importance of supporting athletes and their families.
Dr Saha assured her of the state government’s continued support mentioning that a land provision decision was made in light of her housing challenges.
He took the occasion to speak on significant improvements in sports infrastructure within the state stating the radical changes from previously poor conditions to the establishment of modern facilities such as synthetic football and hockey fields that have garnered admiration from athletes nationwide. The government is focused on honouring both current and former sports figures creating an inspiring environment for future generations.
In his address to students at the event, Dr Saha underscored the balance between academics and sports, advocating for the development of a healthy body alongside education. He encouraged students to consider sports professionally, citing the plethora of talent in Tripura.
Sports Minister Tinku Roy, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, Youth Affairs and Sports Department Secretary Tapas Roy and Director L Darlong were in attendance at the event.
