Tripura CM appeals media for vigilance against social biases

AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha has urged the news media to avoid focusing biases on basis of caste, creed and religion underscorning their duty to serve the entire society. He pointed out that journalists have a significant responsibility to deliver balanced and ethical reporting; guiding and motivating the public. 

He referenced an outdated 'word of mouth' in the medical profession where treatment decisions were influenced by a patient’s religious identity, appealing for vigilance against similar biases in all professions. 

During the inauguration of the lift at the Agartala Press Club, Dr Saha expressed his appreciation for the role of journalists acknowledging their unique ability to present facts compellingly. 

Dr Saha shared insights into his approach to media oversight, highlighting a fortnightly review of news reports conducted from his 'War Room, where key government officials including district magistrates and superintendents of police participate virtually. This review process aimed at ensuring accountability and compliance in public interest is reportedly unique in India.

The Chief Minister also criticised opposition parties for undermining development and welfare initiatives of the incumbent government, warning the media against falling victim to misinformation campaigns. 

He made an assurance to support infrastructure development for the press club while reiterating government’s recognition of the media’s vital role in society.
