Tripura Chief Minister laments the period of the Emergency
AGARTALA: Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha lamented the period of the Emergency declared in 1975 warning against its recurrence. Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party event on Samvidhaan Hatya Diwas Thursday, he recounted his experiences during the Emergency, highlighting the pervasive atmosphere of fear and the risks faced by the citizens.
Dr Saha attributed the period as a enormous threat to India's democracy and civil rights, noting how suppression and political repression occurred under the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The Chief Minister stated that the incumbent central government, since coming to power in 2014, has worked to ensure that such days do not return and articulated the need for educating future generations about this historical event. He criticised the Congress party for its role in the Emergency, calling it a betrayal of democracy and urged BJP workers to raise awareness among the public.
He hailed the observance of June 25 as a reminder that democracy should be preserved.
