Three languages for students starting from Class IX

By Various May 16, 2026 214

NATIONAL: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has instituted a new requirement mandating the study of three languages for students starting from Class IX effective from July 1 of this year. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023 that stipulate that at least two of the three required languages must be native Indian languages.

The CBSE has specified that there will be no board examination for the third language (R3) at the Class X level. Instead, all assessments pertaining to R3 will be conducted internally by the schools based on a school-based evaluation approach.

The performance of students in R3 will be reflected in their CBSE certificates ensuring that it forms part of the official academic record. The Board has reassured that no student will be prevented from participating in the Class X board examinations due to their R3 language studies, thereby maintaining inclusivity within the examination framework.
