Tamil cinema mourns loss of legendary filmmaker K Bhagyaraj
NATIONAL: Tamil cinema mourns the loss of legendary filmmaker K Bhagyaraj, who passed away at the age of 73 from a sudden cardiac arrest Saturday. Revered as the 'King of Screenplay', Bhagyaraj profoundly shaped Kollywood with his mastery of relatable middle-class stories, sharp wit and emotionally resonant family dramas particularly flourishing during the 1980s and 1990s.
His career spanned over five decades, during which he directed more than 25 films and acted in over 75, significantly transforming mainstream cinema by favoring flawed, relatable protagonists over typical action heroes. Bhagyaraj began his journey in the mid-1970s as an assistant to director K Bharathiraja and notably contributed to trendsetting films, including 16 Vayathinile.
His works extended beyond Tamil cinema, with films like Enga Chinna Rasa serving as precursors for successful Hindi adaptations such as Beta.
Aside from filmmaking, he edited the Tamil magazine Bhagya and authored several novels. Born in Vellankoil, Tamil Nadu, Bhagyaraj's personal life saw him marry actress Poornima Jayaram after the untimely death of his first wife, Praveena, in 1983. He is survived by Poornima and their two children, Saranya and Shanthanu Bhagyaraj, who is also a recognised actor in Tamil cinema.
Rati Agnihotri, his co-star from Puthiya Vaarpugal, expressed her sorrow over his passing, recalling him as polite, gentle and supportive. She emphasised the lasting impact he had on her career and the profound loss felt by many in the industry.
