AGARTALA: The Haora Riverfront Development Project has transformed the banks of the Haora River into a symbol of progress for Agartala's residents. Once used as dumping grounds, these areas are now clean and welcoming public spaces.
Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha inaugurated the project Tuesday, attributing the river's deep connection to the city's history and culture. The riverfront has been designed to integrate nature, recreation, fitness and urban life, marking Agartala's inclusion in India's Smart City Mission launched in 2015.
The Chief Minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting Agartala's development as part of the Smart City Mission. He inspected the project, which covers about 1,700 meters from the Steel Bridge to Dashamighat.
Advanced technologies like gabion walls and geo-textiles were used for the riverbank's safety. The project cost around ₹96 crore and includes a five-year maintenance contract.
The riverfront offers many amenities for residents, including walking and cycling paths, viewing decks, open gyms, yoga spaces, children's playgrounds and various recreational areas. Security is ensured with CCTV cameras monitored by the City Command and Control Center and the riverfront is open to the public daily until 9 PM.
The project also focuses on conserving the Haora River's ecosystem and preventing issues like erosion and waterlogging.
The Chief Minister stressed the importance of community involvement in maintaining the cleanliness and beauty of the area while encouraging residents to reduce plastic use. He envisions Agartala as a more developed and livable city, aiming for a strong and developed India by 2047.
Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder stated that the riverfront project is not just about beautification but also about conserving the river and creating a public space. He mentioned that it was developed under Agartala Smart City Limited in cooperation with both central and state governments.
He informed measures to rehabilitate 37 riverside families by providing them with housing and support.
A video documentary on the project was shown at the event.
